Simple, buy all the Volvos (especially that ‘78!) and the Voyager. Also, I’ve always liked the look of those Diamantes...

Hard no on the Lumina. Has the “z34 package” but the seller says it has the 3.1L?

Either it has the 3.4L... which is a mongrel of an engine... OR it HAD the 3.4 and it was swapped with a 3.1.

Either way... I predict the lumina is a basketcase.

Normally I’d say Hard No on the Diamante as well... but for different reasons. Do you like affordable parts that are widely available? Well I believe the Diamante has neither of those attributes. And it also ‘runs rough’. The seller can’t figure out what the problem is. Or they know what it is but are playing dumb because it’s an expensive/difficult fix. For only $650 though, it could be an interesting 24 hours of Lemons racer... where you rip out the powertrain and convert it to FWD using that old 2.5L Chrysler 4 cyl and FWD 3 speed auto that I know you must have lying around...

And I’d like the 1993 Volvo more if it was a manual. The car is slow even with a manual. With the slushbox, I wouldn’t be interested. For the 1978 264... hmmm... a 200 series with a V6? That’s a relatively rare bird.

For the Malibu Wagon, the 502 is the wrong engine. You need to drop in a Buick 3.8L turbo!!!

I think he meant Z34 package as in: He installed the Z34 styling parts.

The Diamante is right up my alley. It’s the same SOHC 6G72 that has powered a lot of my vehicles. Parts for them are readily available and cheap, unless you have a thing against RockAuto. I have all the parts for a 3.0 sitting in my garage, so it’s likely I could solve the rough running without needing to buy anything. I know it’s not timing because the Mitsu version of the 6g72 was interference , so it would already be junk if the timing went, so it’s gotta be an ignition or fuel issue, very likely a bad MAP sensor as they cause a host of issues ( generally without throwing a CEL ). I could very likely have it sorted for no money out of pocket.

I don’t know much about Volvos, I’ve just been gaining interest in them lately.

After driving ( and almost owning ) a 79 Malibu wagon with a 502/4-speed, I can tell you it is definitely the wrong engine...........for all the right reasons.

I thought the Diamante had a DOHC 24V V6, not a SOHC 12V V6... checking wiki... well it seems it could have either one.

I’m not sure how similar the 24V version is to the version installed in Chryslers. And there must be some differences between the Diamante 12V version and the Chrysler version... since the power output is different and it’s in a RWD config.

They came with both in this body style. The next body was DOHC 6G72 only + the 6G74 in the VRX model.

The only differences between the M itsu SOHC 6G72 and the Chrysler SOHC 6G72 are pistons, cams, and intake manifold. Higher compression and better cams are the main reasons the Mitsu version had more power, it’s also a quick way to get more power from a Chrysler engine ;). The DOHC engine has a different head setup, and extra valve reliefs in the pistons, but otherwise are mostly identical. It’s a big reason the 6G72 is a great engine to work with regardless, they were all essentially built to the top engine’s (6G72TT) standard and downgraded from there, so they are very stout in stock form.

Diamantes are FWD.........in the US market. Foreign markets got an AWD option, but there was no RWD. Even so, RWD 6G72s are the same as FWD variants in most aspects, making most parts interchangeable.

I would do a turbo 6G72 long before I’d consider an LS......

Honestly strongly considering the Diamante after talking with the owner.

Sounds like a clean, well-kept car all things considered.
